Still At It
Former CEO of Voices for Illinois Children; appointed by JFK to the Joint Youth Development Committee; Chair Illinois Humanities Council; Trustee University of Chicago; wife of Senator Adlai Stevenson III; mystery novelist.
I used to take energy and health for granted. Now I’ve added an attempt to maintain strength and wits for fear of becoming a greater burden on my children who already pamper me beyond deserving. I want to hear raindrops, feel a breeze on my skin, smell the loam of healthy soil, taste a vine ripened tomato and see the rosy dawn of sunrise, preserving awe, relishing the joys of our senses to appreciate nature’s and human creativity. I believe we thrive best in supportive communities in which love, laughter and shared ideas abound. Such wishes require that we humans protect our environment and our public institutions.
