Retired Professor of Art, Northeastern University; co-founder of the first post-war, artist-run cooperative gallery in Chicago; lecturer; essayist; expert on the history of the martini

I have been painting for almost 80 years. Some thirty years ago, I quit my teaching job so I could devote myself full-time to my art. Many of my works are self-portraits; I’m a cheap model. But really, I see my history in my face. Unless I’m sick, or in the hospital, I paint every day. It is not a job. I can't retire. I can't even quit, because that would destroy a major part of who I am. The thought of quitting painting? I’d die!
