Today's Wednesday posting is the other component of my 2011 Illinois Arts Council grant. Last week's image featured portrait/cloth combinations from the non-profit 'Expanding Lives.' This series was made in cooperation with the Kovler Center for Victims of Torture. 'M' had been imprisoned in Chile, years ago. To survive, he made carvings from items a local priest smuggled in. Art kept him sane. He never made art again once he was released. The subjects in all the Kovler pieces have their faces hidden, contrasting with the Niger ones, making the point that torture victims are hidden in plain sight. This series is on permanent display at the Kovler Center in Chicago.
